Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland and a favorite of the unmarried King, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, she wants to open a shop and create delectable pastries. But for her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for a woman who could be a queen.

At a royal ball where Cath is expected to receive the King’s marriage proposal, she meets handsome and mysterious Jest. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the King and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into a secret courtship.

Cath is determined to choose her own destiny. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

Right from the very first scene of this book (literally) I felt an instant connection. The plot had gripped me and begged me to continue.
Heartless is a compelling story full of imaginative characters and intricate plot developments.
It plays a unique twist on the Alice in Wonderland fairytale – one that I have decided not to share with you, with the hope that you can all experience discovering it for yourself.

As a huge fan of Marrisa Meyer’s previous series, I can affirm that this is yet another testament to her brilliant writing style. The descriptive style allowed me to actually imagine the scene being played out. Unlike some other authors, her dialogue is realistic, and at times, humorous. I believe one of the main skills of Meyer included her ability to weave a particular aspect throughout the entire novel, and well as advancing the plot efficiently. It is as if the story is being propelled in feelings. This makes it easy to read whilst still being complex and enjoyable.
Marissa Meyer easily creates a perfect balance when creating her fairytale refilling.

Furthermore, each character in this novel brings a unique characteristic as they tie in together with apparent ease. Catherine, the main character, is a aristocratic member of society, with a passion for baking. She has dreams of opening a bakery, but when she is proposed to by the King, her plans are thrown off course. Her approach to this difficult situation was extremely interesting to read about, and developed wonderfully throughout the novel.
Cath also maintains relationships with her parents and close friends with awe-inspiring resilience.

In the very beginning of the novel, we are introduced to the character of the Joker. (Not really a spoiler – happens early on). I LOVED HIM SO MUCH HOLEY MOLEY! DEFINITELY ONE OF MY FAVOURITE CHARACTERS.

I honestly did not except to enjoy Heartless as much as I did! Definitely a favourite of the so far.

Frequently asked questions:

Do I need to read the Lunar Chronicles Series before reading this?
